You can feel a season change coming with a little nip in the air early in the morning as you head out to wet a line. Good Spotted Mackerel were caught off Grassy early in the week with fish up to 8 kilo with the odd Spanish amongst them. There were a few Snapper and Pearl Perch on the bottom through the week but there was a lot of water between them. Tuna again were in good numbers with a variety of Long Fin, Yellow Fin and Macs. Small Dolphin Fish were around the FAD and with a slight current running it will probably stay not very productive. In front of the Jail there has been the odd Mackerel and Tuna coming in. Fish Rock has a few Kings but they are mostly Rats at the moment. If you can get out wide there are some very nice fish in 100 to 180 meter. There’s not a great deal of bait on the bait grounds especially when the tuna boat comes in but trolling a Garfish is working well on these late season Mackerel.
There are some monster Flathead being caught in the river and the Back Creek, taking live bait, Plastics or a well presented Bait. The good news is from all reports they are being released back to breed again. Bream are in good numbers along the rock walls. Blackfish are scattered in the river and creek but it’s early days yet. There are reports of Whiting up river jumping all over Nippers and Worms. The odd Jew has been pulled in off the Break Wall if you’re prepared to put some time in.
Tailor action is on the increase with some nice fish off Smoky Beach and Main Beach off the Boulders. Bonito are in good numbers out of the same area. Both of these fish they tell me lend themselves to hot or cold smoking. Bream, Dart and Whiting are in the gutters as well and there is no better way to start the day with a line in the water on the beach as the sun is on the rise.
Take care on the bars
